It was another busy spring for TCTU. We sponsored the Anglers Expedition Group’s Fly Fishing Film tour at the Landmark Center in St. Paul. About 150 avid fly fishers saw 8 mini films on our beloved pastime. In early April, TCTU held its annual fundraising banquet. Money was raised to fund our habitat projects this summer. This year’s recipient of the Duke Hust Award was Tom Helgeson of Midwest Fly Fishing Magazine and the Great Waters Fly Fishing Expo fame. To see the video of the award presentation, it is available on our TCTU Website. (Click on the blog section.) Speaking of the blog, if you want to find out what TCTU has been doing for the past few months, check out the new blog on our website. You’ll see how much fun it is to volunteer at our many TCTU events. What we don’t have is a video of past president, Kevin Biegler falling into a boiling spring while at the Beaver Dam Removal on Eagle Creek in Savage. While most of us were pulling the dam apart, the debris and silt floated downstream and had covered the turbulent spring. Kevin tried to cross the stream and plunged into a 70 foot deep boiling spring. It took 3 of us to pull him out and it took all of us about 15 minutes to stop laughing. I’d like to thank the 40 or so volunteers that braved 30 mile an hour winds and driving snow for a few hours of dirty work in late April. The MN DNR sent TCTU a very nice note of thanks to our volunteers.
If you have read your recent copy of TROUT Magazine, you’ll see that TU has been very busy around Minnesota. There is a very good article on Trout Run by Chris Niskanen of the Pioneer Press. The Minnesota Council of Trout Unlimited has also been busy with the Ballast Water issue and the threat of VHS in Minnesota Waters. Many schools around the state are doing the TU “Trout in the Classroom” program.
TCTU Summer Habitat Projects include Trout Run in SEMN, Pine Creek that feeds into Lake Pepin on the Wisconsin side of the River and a TCTU project on Hay Creek, near Red Wing. All of these projects could use your help. We might even have a small project on the Vermillion on some recently purchased property by the MN DNR. We will keep you d on our website with dates, times and carpool information. We will also send a few email alerts and reminders during the summer for you to join the fun. Maybe you too can see Kevin fall in again! As we are well aware, this is an Election year. Since Trout Unlimited is a 501(c)(3) organization, TCTU cannot endorse any candidate, but what I can do is to remind you that TU is a conservation and environmental organization. One political party is far more eco-friendly than the other. As an individual, we hope you'll take the time to find out where your favorite candidates stand on important issues affecting fish and wildlife and advocate for trout when you cast your ballot.
Also on the ballot this November is the Lessard Legacy Amendment. Minnesotans have the ability to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to improve our environment. Please read the article on the VOTE YES FOR MINNESOTA. Our trout streams, rivers and parks would benefit greatly if this amendment passes. We’re doing things. Please join us.
