by Sara Strassman, Driftless Area Program Manager Good day friends of the Driftless Area Restoration Effort, You are invited to join us for an in person Driftless Area Symposium in La Crosse! Our 2025 event will be hosted at the La Crosse Center in collaboration with Wisconsin Wetlands Association. The main TU symposium will occur on Tuesday, February 25. Registration for the TU Symposium on February 25 is here. We will have a joint networking session with WWA and TU from 6-9 on February 25 including desserts and a cash bar at the La Crosse Center overlooking Riverside Park and the Mississippi River. We hope you will join us to catch up with old friends and build new relationships! New for this year, we have a joint session with WWA on Wednesday, February 26 focused on wetland and stream restoration and the benefits of hydrologic restoration for Driftless watersheds. That afternoon, we will convene a working group focused on Stream and Floodplain Restoration Permitting. There will be particular emphasis on working in FEMA-mapped floodplains and how to enable floodplain reconnection work in the Driftless Area. A discounted registration link for February 26 will be provided in your receipt from the TU event site.
On Thursday, February 27, there will be two sessions of potential interest to our regular Symposium attendees. In the morning, we will host a Workshop for Towns: Resilient Streams, Resilient Infrastructure. This session will be targeted toward county and town officials who manage road infrastructure or watershed management to share the findings of our past 2 years of culvert inventories across Wisconsin’s Driftless Area. Our goal is to share information and provide pathways to project scoping and funding to replace outdated infrastructure and improve stream connectivity for fish and aquatic organisms. We invite our town, village, and county staff to reach out if they have questions or may require travel assistance. This session may be of interest to conservation partners wishing to support fish passage in their area as well. In the afternoon, we will facilitate a workshop entitled “Optimizing Riparian Forest Plantings for Trout Streams”. Our goal with this session is to explore the key conservation objectives and practical considerations for tree plantings along trout streams. Both of these sessions do have a participant cap, so if you are interested in participating in either of these workshops, please reach out to Peter Jonas at[email protected] to inquire about availability.
