THE COLD-WATER CHRONICLES (BLOG)

December Chapter Meeting Recap

12/19/2023

Thanks to all who tuned in by Zoom or showed up in person to hear Brian Nerbonne of the Minnesota DNR talk about Managing for Larger Trout.  Congratulations to our Fly Box winner, Matt Obermeyer!
You can find a copy of Brian's presentation, including a list of streams where Sculpin have been transplanted (slide 15), by clicking the download button below. Due to a technical issue, we did not capture a recording of last night's meeting. Oops.  As a consolation prize, we'd like to refer you to one of our greatest hits videos:  Melissa Wagner of the MN DNR telling the story of Heritage Brook Trout in Southeast Minnesota.

I live and fish southeast mn mostly but I have fished The Vermillion river a few years ago and was wondering how the population of trout were there. I used to catch some very nice browns there but the last few years I fished there it was very tough to catch much. Just wondering if the fish population is down or maybe just more pressure is effecting it. thanks for any info

Answer from the DNR is below. When we get more info, we'll post it in the blog!
We will be analyzing and writing our report from our fall 2023 electrofishing this winter to compare to past years. Off the cuff, our trout numbers are down, including the larger fish likely due to 3 years of drought conditions. There are still larger fish in the system but they are fewer in numbers.
